“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
Winston Churchill
Tikkun olam is a concept in Judaism that Jews bear responsibility not only for their own moral, spiritual, and material welfare, but also for the welfare of society at large. For many the term refers to "Jewish social justice"[or "the establishment of Godly qualities throughout the world".More commonly it means to repair the world.
I am finding lately that repairing the world is way beyond my capabilities and far above my pay grade.
What I can do is work on making my tiny little corner of the world a better place for me and my family.
You have to start somewhere and it might as well be in my own home.
Like any self help program, change doesn't happen overnight. It also doesn't happen without a plan.
A year ago, my house was in the throws of a semi-forced remodeling. After the water heater flooded and ruined our floors, I undertook the project of making some significant changes. That phase 1 made a huge difference and improvement to our living space.
Phase 2 has been ongoing since January as I plug away at reclaiming what once was our living room, then a nursery, then a playroom and eventually a 4th bedroom.
It has been gutted, sheetrocked, sanded and now painted. My hopes are that by mid to late October, the floor will be in and moldings and trim work completed.(Decorating isn't my headache!)
The last part of the 6 month plan is to complete the kitchen transformation. This part is more financial than anything else. Countertops, backsplash,a new range and a new fridge ain't cheap!
If,and that is a big if, all goes well and I remain on course, all of this will be done by the end of 2020.
After that?
Trust me.There is plenty more to do.
That, however, will fall into the next 6 month plan here in my little corner of the world.
